5 Tips on How to Avoid Dry Skin

Dry skin is a significant problem for both men and women. It can cause your skin to be irritable, scaly, and itchy. And when you have sensitive skin, it is the worst. It seems that no matter what we try, we can't seem to get our skin moist and healthy. But, there are ways to remedy this problem. Here are five skincare tips to help prevent dry skin issues.

1. Be careful when bathing and showering

The first big skin care tip is to watch how you are bathing or showering. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends you to start following the below steps while you wash, to avoid dry skin.

  • Limit bath/shower time to 5-10 minutes
  • Use warm water instead of hot water
  • Use only enough soap and cleanser to clean yourself
  • Use a gentle, fragrance-free soap or cleanser

2. Moisturize

Probably the biggest skincare tip that anyone can ever give is to apply moisturizer. Both The AAD and Aurora Health Care have some great suggestions when it comes to moisturizing

  • Moisturize right after you bathe/shower and after you wash your hands and face
  • Use creams and ointments instead of lotions. Olive oil, mineral oils, and shea butter are good options to use
  • Use lip balm to avoid chapped lips

3. Be careful in Dry Air

When it comes to the air around us, there are skin care tips that will come in handy, especially in the cold and dry air.

  • Wear protective clothing and gloves to protect your skin from cold and dry air
  • Keep clothes dry to prevent itchiness or irritation
  • Keep away from sources of heat

4. Think about your Clothing and Laundry

Going back to the clothes that you wear is very important to skincare.

    • Wear hypoallergenic and non-irritable fabrics
    • Wear silk and cotton under sensitive materials such as wool.
    • Use fragrance-free and hypoallergenic laundry detergents to do your laundry.

    5. See a Dermatologist regularly

The final big tip is to regularly see your dermatologist, at a minimum of once a year. They will do a full examination of your skin and will help you if they see anything of concern. If there is something skin-related that is of concern to you, call your dermatologist right away, and they might be able to help you find a solution.
